Can a Driver Assist with Luggage and Walking?
Yes. A private transportation service can often provide reasonable personal assistance during pickup and drop-off, including helping with luggage and walking alongside passengers when needed. Understanding what assistance is available before your trip helps ensure a safe and comfortable experience.
At Smart Ride Central Ohio, every ride is personally driven by owner Steve French. Assistance is available with loading and unloading luggage, opening vehicle doors and providing an arm for stability while walking to or from the vehicle when appropriate.
Luggage Assistance
Steve will gladly load and unload suitcases, carry-on bags, backpacks, walkers and other personal belongings that passengers can safely travel with. Whether you’re traveling to the airport, a hotel or another destination, you won’t need to lift heavy luggage into or out of the vehicle yourself.
If you’re traveling with oversized luggage, golf clubs, a folding wheelchair or other large items, mention them when requesting your quote so adequate cargo space can be confirmed.
Walking Assistance
Passengers who would like additional stability may receive an arm for support while walking between the vehicle and the entrance of a home, hotel, medical office or airport terminal. This assistance can be especially helpful for seniors or anyone recovering from surgery or an injury.
While assistance is available, passengers should be able to walk independently or with their own mobility device. Transportation services are not a substitute for medical or professional caregiving assistance.
Airport Assistance
For airport departures, Steve can help move luggage from your home to the vehicle and from the vehicle to the terminal entrance. For arriving passengers at John Glenn Columbus International Airport, he can meet you near baggage claim, assist with luggage and accompany you to the vehicle.
This extra assistance can make airport travel less stressful, particularly for seniors, families and travelers with multiple bags.
Medical Appointments
Many passengers appreciate having assistance getting between the vehicle and a doctor’s office, outpatient surgery center or hospital entrance. Steve can walk with you to the entrance and help carry personal belongings.
However, transportation service does not include medical assistance, lifting passengers or providing care inside a medical facility.
Senior Transportation
Many seniors value having a familiar driver who takes extra time during pickup and drop-off. Assistance may include opening doors, carrying groceries or luggage, helping with walkers and providing a steady arm while walking.
If additional assistance is needed beyond basic transportation, family members should discuss those needs before booking so expectations are clear.
What Assistance Cannot Be Provided?
- Lifting or carrying passengers
- Medical care or first aid
- Administering medications
- Providing wheelchair transfers
- Remaining with passengers during appointments
- Personal caregiving services
Should You Mention Mobility Needs When Booking?
Yes. If you use a walker, cane, folding wheelchair or simply prefer extra time entering or leaving the vehicle, it’s helpful to mention that when requesting your reservation. This allows Steve to plan for the appropriate amount of time and ensure your trip is as comfortable as possible.
Why Choose an Owner-Operated Car Service?
Because every ride is personally driven by owner Steve French, you know exactly who will be assisting you. There is no uncertainty about who will arrive or whether your special requests have been communicated to another driver.
That consistency allows passengers to build trust and confidence, especially those who travel frequently or appreciate a little extra assistance.
